Francisco Goya's chilling "The Third of May 1808"
This page aims to be a resource for students who are taking AP European History. The materials were written as homework, projects, or reviews for Mr. Pugh’s WLHS AP European History course. Most of the material is mine, my sister’s, or a synthesis. Much of the content, however, is from Wikipedia or is directly quoted from the textbook. The textbook used is The Western Heritage by Kagan, Ozment, and Turner (8th edition). Most of my work (especially the reviews) correlates well with the text, though not all.
You are welcome to use the documents below as a supplemental resource in AP European History. However, these materials in no way subplant the textbook or original work on your behalf. If you find a mistake or would like me to make any other changes, just leave a reply at the bottom of the page.
Most of the documents are available in both Microsoft Office and PDF formats.
HINT FOR TEST: Know the difference between male and female names in French. It’s actually pretty useful on the test (especially when trying to guess between answers). The key is whether the name ends in an -e (female) or not (male)–Julienne vs. Julien.
A Note for Google Users: When searching for “francisco goya”, Google is directing a number of people to this page. You’re welcome to peruse the resources here, but I don’t particularly focus on Goya. Other websites with information about Goya include Wikipedia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and Brown University.
The review for Chapter 20 provides some information about Goya and the social and cultural upheavals that occurred throughout the early 1800′s. A few key points about Goya:
- Goya was a court painter to the Spanish Crown, a chronicler of history. He has been regarded both as the last of the old masters and as the first of the moderns. The subversive and subjective element in his art, as well as his bold handling of paint, provided a model for the work of later generations of artists, notably Monet and Picasso
- Goya was at first quite a traditionalist, but (perhaps due to lead poisoning) as he advanced in age, his works became more edgy/romantic. He rails against the injustice done to insane in some of his works.
- His most famous work (for our purposes) is The Third of May, 1808 which depicts the savagery of the executions during the Peninsular War. Goya portrays a mechanical process of execution in which most likely the innocent are being killed in a war of intimidation. The power of the individual in highly present.

Thank you so much your reviews are really helping me out in this class.
Glad I could be of help! If you find mistakes or find ways to improve the notes, then let me know.
why dont you have chp 14 review but thnx for the rest
In my AP Euro course, we only did a cursory review of Chapter 14–so I never got around to making the in-depth notes that I have for the other chapters. Sorry!
chapter 21 review please!
Sorry Sai, I wasn’t able to write notes for Chapter 21. Maybe this summer…
chapter 23 and 24 notes please
Sorry Abhi! I never got around to writing chapter 23 notes, and we only covered chapter 24 tangentially in class (so no notes were necessary).
I may make some more notes this summer (probably not…). I would also be happy to post notes that others have made for any missing chapters.
Thank you so so much for the review!! i definitely do not mind for the missing chapters. Thank you Thank YOU for the outlines though.
I’m glad that the reviews were useful!
This is really helpful! i wish i had found this earlier, this also goes very well with Spielvogel’s Western Civilization!!
Thank You(:
Thank you so much! This was incredibly helpful because it was so thorough! I most definitely will be recommending this to all my classmates taking AP Euro. Thanks once again! :)
Thank you for the notes.
can you please provide a review about World War 1 and imperialism
Hi Kristal,
I think Downton Abbey is better than any notes I could write.
But in reality, I don’t think I’ll be adding any new notes soon. If you do find a good source of notes for the chapters that I’m missing, I would be very happy to link to them from here.
I LOVE YOU. PASSING AP EURO <3
Will you please do an outline for the cold war era and the emergence of the new europe?
Ha, that’s been on my to-do list for a few years now. The only thing I can promise is that it won’t be done by the end of this school year… Sorry!
